How the Process Works

Evaluation starts with a semen analysis, hormone tests, and a genetic work up, which often includes a karyotype and a check for Y chromosome microdeletions. If surgery is planned, a urologist performs micro TESE to collect tissue from the testicle. The embryology team examines the tissue for sperm and, if only round spermatids are present, identifies suitable cells for injection.

Meanwhile, the partner or an egg donor completes a standard IVF stimulation and egg retrieval. Injected eggs receive assisted activation, then embryos are grown in the laboratory and monitored. A healthy embryo is transferred to the uterus, and a pregnancy test follows about 9 to 12 days later.

Success rates are low compared with standard ICSI, and results vary widely between laboratories. Published data on the health of children born after ROSI are limited, so long term follow up information is still growing.
